Open Call for PhD Scholarships

Guidelines for principal supervisor

The Danish Data Science Academy (DDSA) has opened the first round of applications for ten three-year PhD scholarships for individual research projects within any field of data science.

As a principal supervisor in a DDSA scholarship application, your help to the young scientist in the application process is crucial.

What is a DDSA Scholarship?

The DDSA invites talented young researchers to develop their own research projects in collaboration with a principal supervisor from a Danish university. By combining full academic freedom and collaboration with a senior researcher, we aim at attracting the very best candidates with a passion for research, and support them in developing and carrying out visionary projects with a strong data science component.

In addition to funding, successful candidates and their supervisors will become integral parts of the prestigious DDSA Fellowship Programme offering a number of exclusive possibilities, such as participation in the annual DDSA meeting for the entire Danish data science community, and many other DDSA network and education activities across scientific domains and sectors in Denmark.

Who can be supervisor?

In order to be principal supervisor in an application, you must hold a position as associate professor or professor (or equivalent) at a Danish university and conduct research within the field of the proposed PhD project.

A principal supervisor can be main supervisor for at most two applications per application round.

The DDSA recommends also assigning a co-supervisor to increase scientific interaction.

What is the Principal Supervisor’s role in the application process?

As a principal supervisor, your most important task in the application process is to support the candidate’s application in the best way possible, by providing constructive feedback on his or her research proposal.

It is also important that you assist your candidate with complying with all formalities relating to enrolment in the relevant PhD programme and employment at your university in case of funding.

In addition, you must contribute with two texts to the application:

  • A short CV (max. two A4 pages, font 12, single spacing).
  • A statement that describes why you support the candidate and the project, including what prior knowledge you have of the candidate (max. two A4 pages, font 12, single spacing).

Please be aware that applications not meeting the requirements will not be considered in the evaluation process.
