SUMMARY:Hands-on introduction to data management planning
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 23 April 2026\, from 9:00 to 16:00 \nTarget group: The course is aimed at PhD students from the Faculty of Humanities\, the Faculty of Social Sciences\, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Theology. It is\, however\, open to all PhD students from the University of Copenhagen. No prior knowledge is required. \nCourse description: Good research data management (RDM) practices are an essential part of good research practices. They increase the efficiency and quality of data collections and ensure secure handling and storage of data (to prevent data breaches\, misuse\, or loss) as well as compliance with requirements by research institutions\, publishers\, funders\, and legislation (e.g. GDPR). \nThis one-day course provides hands-on training on best practices in managing research data (including quantitative and qualitative data)\, during which the course participants draft their own data management plans (DMPs) for their respective research projects. The course also covers (legal) requirements and the University’s procedures and policies on research data. \nAcademic Aim:\n– Introduction to basic concepts and best practices in RDM\n– Drafting a DMP for a current research project and attaining the skills to write DMPs with ease\n– Gaining further knowledge about RDM requirements by the University of Copenhagen (UCPH)\, publishers\, funders\, and legislation (e.g. GDPR)\, and how to fulfil these \nCourse organisers and teachers:\nResearch Compliance\, Research and Information Security\, University of Copenhagen\, contact: datamanagement@ku.dk\n– Lene Offersgaard\, Senior Executive Advisor Research Data Management\n– Siri Völker\, Special Consultant Research Data Management \nPreparation:\n– Participants will fill in a template (1 page) regarding data management issues related to their research project. Template will be provided after admission to the course and must be submitted to datamanagement@ku.dk no later than 14 April 2026\n– Participants should read the material referred to in the first section of the reading list for the course. \nDuring and after the course:\n– Participants will prepare a draft of a data management plan (DMP) and receive feedback on its contents from the course presenters. Please bring a computer to create your DMP draft during the course. The DMP draft is to be forwarded to datamanagement@ku.dk no later than 5 May 2026. \nLanguage: English \nECTS: 1 \nMax. numbers of participants: 24. In case of fewer than 6 participants\, the course will be cancelled. \nAdmission: This course is organised by Research Compliance\, Research and Information Security\, University of Copenhagen. PhD students enrolled at one of the four PhD schools at Faculty of Humanities\, Law\, Social Sciences\, and Theology at University of Copenhagen will be admitted to the course on a first-come\, first-served basis.
