Offering valid statistical conclusions by learning from unreliable data is critical for several real-world applications. However\, it may be challenging to dive into AI for network sciences\, as it requires understanding many concepts from probability\, statistics\, distributed AI/ML\, and data markets. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Human-Centered AI \nDescription: Artificial Intelligence has experienced a tremendous increase in attention in recent years across all sectors\, including health\, transportation\, finance\, construction\, and entertainment. In the realm of software engineering\, integrating AI in a human-centered manner is crucial for ensuring that these technologies enhance human capabilities and maintain ethical integrity. Ben Shneiderman envisions “computing devices that dramatically amplify human abilities\, empowering people and ensuring human control.” He proposes that “Human-Centered AI (HCAI) enables people to see\, think\, create\, and act in extraordinary ways\, by combining potent user experiences with embedded AI support services that users want.”\nThis three-day PhD course\, inspired by the Copenhagen Manifesto\, explores the intersection of AI and software engineering\, focusing on human-centric design principles and ethical considerations. Participants will focus into the core values of human-centered AI\, such as responsibility\, ethics\, transparency\, equity\, inclusivity\, continuous learning\, and environmental sustainability.\nThe course is structured to provide an interactive and comprehensive learning experience\, utilizing Liberating Structures to facilitate active engagement and collaboration. Participants will: \n\nUnderstand the foundational principles of human-centered AI and their application in software engineering.\nExplore strategies for designing AI systems that prioritize human needs\, transparency\, and equity.\nDevelop practical skills in implementing and evaluating human-centered AI technologies.\nReflect on the ethical implications and societal impact of AI in software engineering.\nBy the end of the course\, participants will have a robust understanding of how to integrate human-centered principles into their work\, ensuring that AI technologies serve the common good and promote human wellbeing.\n\nLiberating Structures: Liberating Structures (LS) are a collection of easy-to-learn interaction methods that enhance relational coordination and trust among participants. Unlike traditional frontal lecturing\, LS methods focus on interactive workshops where everyone participates actively. These structures enable all participants to contribute to shaping the direction and outcomes of the course by structuring how people interact and collaborate. LS methods are designed to include and unleash everyone’s contributions in ways that are productive and engaging. SUMMARY:Visual Communication of Research through Video and Images
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Visual Communication of Research through Video and Images \nDescription: This course equips PhD researchers from all disciplines with the foundational skills to plan\, capture\, and edit compelling visual narratives of their work\, addressing the growing expectation from journals and conferences for video and image-based explanations of dynamic systems and complex results. Through a blend of focused lectures and hands-on exercises\, students learn to storyboard and script their ideas\, master basic principles of framing\, lighting\, audio\, and motion\, integrate data visualization into moving media\, handle editing and post-production workflows\, consider accessibility and ethical presentation\, and prepare assets for effective dissemination. \n The core of the course is project-based: each student develops and iteratively refines a visual communication piece centered on a research project of their choice\, culminating in a final deliverable in the form of a short video and/or detailed storyboard. Evaluation is based on the clarity and impact of that final project\, the demonstration of applied techniques\, and the reflective development process. By the end of this course\, students will have edited a short video and gained a toolbox of practices and principles to enhance the reach and intelligibility of their future research communication. \nPrerequisites: None \n Learning objectives: By the end of the course\, students will be able to identify the key components of effective visual communication and describe the video production process\, including planning\, shooting\, and editing. They will apply techniques such as storyboarding\, framing\, pacing\, and narration to communicate their own research projects clearly and ethically through video or images. Students will be able to critique visual materials using established principles\, justify their design decisions\, and adapt their skills to future research contexts.
