DDSA Annual Report 2023

As we look back, 2023 has been characterised as a year in which we have been able to lean on our experiences from the startup mode of 2022. The first full year of Danish Data Science Academy lay a solid foundation for our journey, which paved the way for many parallel activities in full action in 2023, and we continuously expand with new initiatives.

We have awarded 20 talented young data scientists with a PhD Fellowship and 6 with a Postdoc Fellowship. We have awarded 88 Travel Grants and 29 Visit Grants, organised four conferences, including our first D3A conference in collaboration with our friends at Pioneer Centre for AI and Digital Research Centre Denmark with 500 attendees. Our National Data Science PhD Meetup series has been launched successfully, with 100 attendees and two meetups, along with two Pre-Graduate Retreats with 99 participants, and a Data Visualisation workshop. We have facilitated three Mentoring Programmes with 138 pairs, awarded 48 event grants with 6,500 participants, and 13 course grants with 880 participants.

Our online presence continues to grow, and a lot of people continue to join us on LinkedIn and X, and sign up for our newsletter, as well as co-creating our community calendar by submitting cool data science events!

Looking ahead to 2024, we are particularly excited about the outcome of our Cross-Academy PhD Scholarship call in partnership with our sister-academies, Danish Cardiovascular Academy and Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy. In 2024, we will also almost double the number of DDSA Fellows to around 50. This growth prompts us to consider new initiatives, such as dedicated Postdoc opportunities, which are currently absent from our portfolio.

A special thanks to Novo Nordisk Foundation and Villum Fonden for making it all possible. This enthusiasm is fundamental in achieving the DDSA mission – to support a national collaborative network of data science experts across universities, public institutions, and industries, and to inspire and train the next generation of data scientists through educational, interdisciplinary, and collaborative activities. It is such a pleasure seeing Danish Data Science Academy unfold through this willingness to co-create and impact, drawing from each unique perspectives and experiences in the aim of Growing DanishData Science!

Discover the exciting first full year of Danish Data Science Academy as we awarded the first 10 PhD Fellows at our Grand Opening, launched our Mentoring Programme and Pre-graduate Retreat, funded Visit and Travel Grants, and hosted our fully booked flagship event ‘Danish Data Science 2022’.
