Bringing Data Science Into Public Conversation
DDSA x CPH:DOX
A New Collaboration Between DDSA and CPH:DOX
This year, DDSA partners with CPH:DOX through their SCIENCE:CINEMA programme—an initiative that connects research, society, and culture through documentary film.
The collaboration brings data science into the public sphere in a way that is engaging, accessible, and rooted in real-world stories. By hosting expert debates after two selected documentaries, DDSA helps ensure that Danish research is part of broader societal conversations—beyond academia and across sectors.
The partnership supports the strategic goals of DDSA 2.0, especially within Advocacy and Public Engagement. It encourages experts to contribute actively to public debate, strengthens DDSA’s role as a responsible societal actor, and positions Danish data science on an international platform.
By bridging specialists and citizens, the collaboration fosters dialogue, co-creation, and long-term public trust in data science.
Panel Debate: Glowing in the Dark – Exploring Ocean Biodiversity with AI
After the screening of Life Illuminated
March 18 · 16:30–18:30 · Grand Teatret
The ocean’s true diversity is far greater than what we typically see. When deep-sea organisms are brought to the surface, fragile species are damaged and their bioluminescent signals disappear. To understand life in the deep, researchers now rely on advanced optical and acoustic technologies that capture ecosystems in their natural environment.
But these innovations create enormous amounts of visual data. AI is becoming essential—not only to classify images, but to detect patterns, recognize species, and translate raw observations into new insights about biodiversity and ocean processes.

Panel Debate: Beyond the War Game – AI, Ethical Dilemmas & Responsibility
After the screening of Intelligence Rising
March 21 · 17:00–19:00 · BigBio Nordhavn
AI is increasingly shaping modern conflict simulations and strategic decision-making. But what data informs these models? How are they designed? And how do we ensure that AI strengthens security without amplifying risk?
This debate explores the technical, ethical, and geopolitical implications of AI in defense—from the challenges of responsible deployment to the global structures shaped by emerging technologies.
Speakers:
- Daniel Møller Ølgaard, Assistant Professor, Royal Danish Defence College
- Morten Axel Pedersen, Chief Scientist, Centre for AI in Society (CAISA)
- Anna Nadibaidze, Postdoctoral Researcher, Center for War Studies
Moderator:
- Marwa Hassan, Strategic Advisor, National Defence Technology Center
Film: Intelligence Rising
Venue: BigBio Nordhavn
The SCIENCE:CINEMA is presented in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, Videnskab.dk, and DDSA, and is made possible with support from the Lundbeck Foundation, the Leo Foundation, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
