Na Min An, a recent Visit Grant recipient, used her stay to collaborate with a leading NLP group working on explainable AI. The visit enabled her to explore the intersection of computer vision and natural language processing, with a focus on interpretability in multimodal models.

“The research visit has significantly contributed to my research and scientific development by allowing me to explore an advanced natural language processing (NLP) group specialized in explainable AI. The group inspired me to synergize two fields – computer vision (CV) and NLP, especially by probing into the internal reasoning mechanisms of multimodal models.

– Na Min An

During her stay, Na Min An participated in seminars and discussions that deepened her understanding of attribution methods and their application to vision-language models. She engaged directly with the authors of a recent ACL publication, Revealing the Parametric Knowledge of Language Models, and explored how their attribution framework could be extended to multimodal settings.

“Being on-site accelerated idea exchange and helped me to concretize the idea of how we could mitigate biases in vision-language models’ neuron-level attribution techniques. Most importantly, the visit laid the groundwork for a potential Ph.D. fellowship proposal within the DDSA research scope.”

The visit resulted in the development of a new algorithm proposal aimed at improving model transparency and mitigating bias in multimodal AI systems. The proposed post-hoc explainability algorithm could benefit both researchers working on model interpretability and end-users seeking more reliable AI tools.

DDSA Travel and Visit Grants support short-term research stays , activities and visits that strengthen academic development and international collaboration within data science.

  • Travel Grants are available for students affiliated with Danish institutions who wish to participate in data science activities abroad.
  • Visit Grants support students visiting Danish research groups.

Both grants aim to facilitate knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary learning, and the development of new ideas within DDSA’s research scope.
